His research was done meticulously on location in France and Italy. Finley was published more than thirty times concerning his field of expertise. He was twice elected President of the LSU Faculty Senate, and was established as Chairman of the Department of History and Social Studies, serving in this prestigious position from 1992 until his retirement in 2005. Finley was awarded the Summer Fellowship in European History, University of Virginia, (1976), and the Summer Fellowship in Military History in 1983, and as a result was invited to lecture at the United States Military Academy at West Point.
One of his books, The Most Monstrous of Wars…, is considered by most as the definitive work on this period, and as a result is used as the text in University classes.
